Anti-Money Laundering Requirements for Property Buyers and Sellers
From 1 July 2026, new Australian Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) laws will apply to all property sales and purchases.
These reforms are designed to help prevent criminal activities such as money laundering, fraud, and terrorism financing, while increasing transparency and integrity within the property market.
As a result, real estate agents, settlement agents, conveyancers, and lawyers involved in property transactions will be required to conduct comprehensive identity verification and customer due diligence checks for all buyers and sellers. In some circumstances, additional information and documentation may also be required to satisfy these legal obligations.
These requirements will form a standard part of the property transaction process and are intended to protect both consumers and the wider community. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we comply with these important legislative requirements.
